How we work it out

This one's simple arithmetic, not a benchmarked score — which means it works for any small business, not just one kind. Here's what happens:

  1. Your cash on hand

    Whatever's actually available in the business's bank accounts right now.

  2. Your average monthly expenses

    Everything it costs to keep the business running each month.

  3. Cash ÷ expenses = months of runway

    Compared against the 3–6 month range most small-business guidance points to as a minimum buffer.
